Have you considered the benefits of mentioning others on LinkedIn? (Mentioning on LinkedIn is comparable to tagging on Facebook and Instagram.)

Earlier this week, my friend Jonathan Castner, owner of Castner Creative, shared a post on LinkedIn that started with:

“Here’s a little gift to start your new year right. These are a bunch of people who are powerful and important to me and my business. I recommend that you get to know them and be better, stronger and happier for it.”

He then mentioned 20 people, and I was honored to be one of them. So, I wrote a comment on his post thanking him, which meant that I was notified about the comments that others made.

Although I know a few of the people on Jonathan’s list, there are many on the list who I don’t know. Now, I have a reason to reach out, invite them to connect on LinkedIn, and set up a Zoom visit.

I’m a big fan of Jonathan’s approach to recognizing others on LinkedIn.

How and Why to Mention People

  • When creating a LinkedIn post, consider mentioning one or more of your connections. Depending on their settings, you can also mention people you are not connected with.
  • When you mention someone, LinkedIn notifies them. You can see these notifications by clicking on the word “Notifications” in the menu bar.
  • To mention them while creating a post or comment, type the @ sign, followed the person’s first and last name. When you see a box with their photo, name, and headline, click on it.
  • Wondering how to decide who to mention and when? It could be someone who has invited you to speak at an event. Perhaps it could be someone you worked on a project with, or a fellow volunteer. Maybe a post or an article you’re sharing touches on the area of expertise of a connection.
  • When someone on LinkedIn comments on one of your posts or mentions you, be sure to respond. You can do that publicly by replying to their post or comment. You can also write them privately via a LinkedIn message or email.

Benefits of Mentioning Others

  • The people you mention appreciate being publicly honored by being mentioned.
  • You provide networking opportunities when you mention the names of many people, as Jonathan did.
  • By mentioning people, you can help them grow their business.
