Have you ever had the experience of being interviewed by a kindred spirit? When Nan McKay, founder of TrailBlazers Impact Interviews, interviewed me for her podcast, that’s what I experienced.

Not only are we age contemporaries, we are both from the Upper Midwest. We both worked in the public sector during our 20s. Fast forward to now, we both have our own businesses with related services and goals.

Services Provided by Joyce and Nan

I coach business owners and job seekers, especially those 55 and up, to be more effective and productive on social media, especially LinkedIn. My services include private tutoring sessions and group/team training.

Nan focuses on providing inspiration and tools for women age 50 and older who want to start a business. Just over three years ago, she launched TrailBlazers Impact Interviews. During this time, she has interviewed a wide range of business owners.

Quoting from her LinkedIn profile: “women and men share their secrets to success – and their heartaches – in extraordinary stories. And some had very rough beginnings – but made it anyway.

These stories touch your heart and soul and make you realize it is possible to prevail even in the face of gender bias and/or racial discrimination and to blaze your own trail where there is no clear path ahead.”

In addition to her podcast, Nan is developing a series of how-to courses and webinars geared toward women entrepreneurs. Her book, “Gold in the Golden Years: The Definitive Guide to Ensuring You Never Run Out of Money” is due out soon.

Nan’s Interview of Joyce for an Episode of TrailBlazers Impact Interviews

Not only is Nan an interviewer extraordinaire, she provides very thorough summaries of each podcast episode on her website. In addition, she includes a bulleted list of key takeaways from each interview and timestamps specific sections of each episode.

Here are the takeaways from our episode, entitled “How to Help Boomers Become Social Media Savvy.” These are geared toward people, especially women, who are considering starting their own business.

  • “The importance of focusing on one or two social media platforms when starting depending on where your audience is
  • The interesting aspect of the Clubhouse platform that is helpful for business owners
  • How to combine energy and time management to achieve a balance between work and life
  • How to be a leader versus a manager as a small business owner
  • The importance of onboarding your family into your business as your support system”
