Tailor Your LinkedIn Profile

Your LinkedIn profile is one of the most important showcases available. By tailoring it, you enhance your brand by emphasizing key information. There is a standard template for a LinkedIn profile, but you can move sections around within the template. And for most sections of your profile, you can move around the listings within that section.     Repositioning Sections of Your Profile Click on the icon with the up and down arrow at the top right of a section, and drag that section to wherever you want it to appear in your profile. For example, I clicked on that [...]

Dealing with Notifications on Social Media

Are you getting too many notifications on social media? Many of my clients tell me they’re frustrated by the number of notifications they receive each day. For example, I know someone who made a relative of hers a “close friend” on Facebook. Then she set up her notifications so that every time the relative posted on Facebook, she was notified. Not only that, but she had the notifications arriving as texts on her mobile phone. She’d be in the middle of a business meeting and get distracted by the steady flow of texts indicating that her relative had posted something. [...]

Are You Being Overly Promotional on Social Media?

If more than 20% of your posting on social media is promotional, you could be turning people off. Keep in mind that people go to social media to be informed, entertained, and uplifted. They don’t go there to be “sold” on your services or even to see a lot of “hype” about what is going on with your business. Yet, if you provide value to your social media connections, they will be eager to see your next post, update, tweet, etc. Just the other day, someone tagged me in a Facebook post, noting that she doesn’t usually post her speaking [...]

Rocking a Panel Presentation

On Wednesday, September 30th, a panel made up of seven members of Colorado Women in Social Media did an awesome job presenting “Becoming an Influencer” at Denver Startup Week. Over 200 people attended, and many more had to be turned away for lack of space. As mentioned in last week’s post, “Prepping for a Panel Presentation,” this appearance had been in the works for several of months, spearheaded by Valerie Morris, Founder and Account Manager at Tintero Creative. See that post for tips on how to prepare for and promote a panel presentation. This one is devoted to giving the [...]

Prepping for a Panel Presentation

On Wednesday, September 30th, a panel of members of Colorado Women in Social Media will present “Becoming an Influencer” at Denver Startup Week. There is still time to register for this program or the entire annual event. Although all these events are free, you will need to pick up a wristband at the week's Basecamp to be admitted into any of the events. This link is directly to this specific presentation, but you can get to the rest of the event from there: http://www.denverstartupweek.org/schedule/912-becoming-an-influencer This presentation has been in the works for a couple of months, spearheaded by Valerie Morris, [...]

Honor Those Who Open Doors for You

Who has opened a door for you, either in your career or your personal life? Who has made a positive impact on your life? To whom will you be forever grateful? Have you considered using social media as a way to honor and thank them? This blog post is a tribute to three amazing women who have opened doors for me.   Helen Hand, President, Colorado Free University Since taking over as President in 2004, Helen has provided direction and vision to this lifelong learning center, which has been offering classes to adults since 1987. As she states in her [...]

9 Ways to Use Twitter at Conferences

In last week’s blog post on using social media at conferences, Social Media and Conferences,  I primarily focused on LinkedIn as the place to go prior to, during, and after a conference. Several people who read my post brought up Twitter as their “go-to” social site when they are at a conference. “I find that Twitter is the best place to connect when I meet someone at a conference. It’s easy to use and an easy way to strike up a conversation.” Social Connections, LLC “My conference networking tool is Twitter. It definitely helps when the conference has a special hashtag.” [...]

Social Media and Conferences

Having just returned from the annual Toastmasters International conference, I have some thoughts on using social media to get more out of in-person events. Toastmasters is the premier provider of leadership and communication training in the world, so this was a large event – over 2,500 attendees from all over the world. But these ideas could be applied to a smaller gathering such as a state-wide or city-wide event, a local gathering for your industry, or a meeting for an organization you volunteer with.   Prior to the Event Reach out via LinkedIn, Facebook, other social sites, email, or even [...]

What’s Your Company’s “Back Story”?

People often ask me how I happened to become a social media tutor. And, like the story of how I met my husband, it is a story I love to tell. However, it wasn’t until I read Andrea Sternberg’s terrific article “How to Create a Better Bio” in the July 20, 2015 issue of Baby Boomer Entrepreneur that it occurred to me that this story belonged in the Summary section of my LinkedIn page. This is the way it appears there now: In 2010, when I was 61, my manager said he thought I did a great job of explaining [...]
