In preparing to teach the Facebook for Beginners class at this week at Colorado Free University, a local community learning center, I really dug deeply into Facebook.
Much of the information was review. Yet there were a few interesting items that I gleaned from my research and from other helpful sources of Facebook info.
Facebook Factoids
- You can join up to 300 Facebook groups. It is hard to imagine anyone joining that many groups, but I suppose there could be people with loads of interests and loads of time on their hands. How many groups are you in? How many are you active in?
- You don’t have to have a personal account on Facebook to have a business page on Facebook. Actually, I learned this factoid back in June, but thought I would include it here. To me, this makes total sense and I am glad to see this change. Your thoughts?
- You can “unlike” your business page if you don’t want to have those postings on your personal page, aka timeline. Of course this applies just to those who created their business page prior to change just listed above.
- You can tag up to 50 people or pages in a photo. So keep that in mind with photos of large gatherings.
- You can load up to 1,000 photos per album. My only comment to this is WOW, that’s lot of pictures.
- You can have an unlimited number of administrators for a Facebook business page. However, be forewarned that any administrator with a “manager” status can delete the page. So, be very selective about who gets put into that status. Ever had a problem with an administrator of your business page?
- You can limit chat to just a few friends. Use “advanced settings” found by clicking the gear icon at the bottom of the chat column. To me this is a very handy setting if there are just a few people you really want to chat with. Ever try to avoid someone while on Facebook chat?

What random Facebook factoids have you discovered? It would be fun to hear from the readers of this blog about other less well known features of Facebook.

You don’t have to have a personal account on Facebook to have a business page on Facebook has been an option for a long time yet its not recommended unless your sole purpose is to manage Pages and ad campaigns. The reason its not recommended is because the can’t be found in search, send or receive friend requests or build apps.

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for those words of caution about creating a business page on Facebook without linking it to a personal account. I helped a Toastmaster create a business page who did not want to have a personal page. When I search her on Facebook and on Google, I find her Facebook business page. So, it seems that she can be found. Certainly a down side of not having personal and business pages connected is that a person can’t request friends to like his or her business page. Some people want to build apps and others don’t. I just think that it comes down to “it depends” in terms of what folks want to do with Facebook’s business pages.
