Have you ever wondered how to add sections to your LinkedIn profile?
Nearly a year ago, LinkedIn changed the process for doing this.
This blog post is the third in a series of three posts on how to add sections to your profile.
In the first of the three blog posts, I went over the three groups of sections: Core, Recommended and Additional. Then I provided tips for how to approach the Core sections.
Here’s a link to that post: https://boomerssocialmediatutor.com/adding-sections-to-your-linkedin-profile-tips-for-the-core-sections/
In the second of the three blog posts, I provided tips for how to approach the Recommended sections.

For this third and final blog post, I’m providing tips for the Additional sections of a LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn says that by completing one or more of these sections “you add even more personality to your profile.” They go on to say “these sections will help you grow your network and build more relationships.” I wholeheartedly agree with LinkedIn.
As a reminder, the place to start when adding one or more sections to your profile is to click on the button “Add profile section.” On the app, the button is called “Add section.”
Tips for Selected Additional Sections
The additional sections that I find are relevant to most LinkedIn users are: volunteer experience, publications, projects, honors & awards, and organizations.
- List positions in the volunteer experience section to differentiate yourself from others in your field. Including volunteer leadership roles provides terrific opportunities for you to demonstrate your professionalism and skills beyond your paid positions. Plus, potential employers as well as clients and referral partners are drawn to people who give back to their community.
- List newsletter or magazine articles, chapters in a book, guest blog posts, and more in the publications section. Doing so will help you to distinguish yourself from others in your field.
- Projects are a fabulous way to set yourself apart from others in your field and show your initiative. These are time-limited activities with a beginning and an end. They can be for a job or in a volunteer capacity. If you were part of a team that completed the project, add your team members to the field provided. However, you need to be connected with them on LinkedIn to be able to add them to the project.
- Items listed for the honors & awards section can either be related to your professional contributions or your community involvement. The honors & awards you get through your paid or volunteer work help to demonstrate your professionalism and credibility.
- Finally, be sure to include specific information about membership in your current and previous organizations in the organizations section. Your involvement with professional or community groups will appeal to people who are connected to these organizations.
