Say Yes to New Opportunities

Do you say “yes” to new opportunities? In other words, when you have the chance to stretch yourself beyond your comfort zone, how do you respond? My tendency is to take the chance, and when I’ve done that, I’ve rarely regretted doing so. Here’s some recent examples of times that I’ve said “yes” and had wonderful experiences. Last-Minute Invitation to Present a Workshop Kris Pool, a Toastmaster leader in Wisconsin, and I have been connected for 14 years on LinkedIn. We are not in regular communication, though she occasionally comments on my posts. She’s a member of Professional Career [...]

Improve Your Communication and Leadership Skills

I encourage you to improve your communication and leadership skills. Most people join Toastmasters to improve their public speaking skills. They might need to give better presentations at work, or they may be doing a lot of speaking to help market their business. Perhaps they need to build their confidence, both professionally and personally. Research has shown that public speaking is most people’s greatest fear. Therefore, they join Toastmasters to conquer that fear and be more successful in life. If you want to visit a Toastmasters club, go to https://www.toastmasters.org/find-a-club  to find a club near you. I recommend that you [...]

How Meetings Via Zoom Could Broaden Who Can Attend a Gathering

Have you thought about how meetings via Zoom could broaden who can attend a gathering? When our local groups and organizations only meet in person, it was impossible for folks outside the area to attend. Yet, now with so many meetings being held online, it is possible for others outside the local area to visit.   Two Recent Examples of Out of the Area Visitors to Toastmasters Clubs Last week, two of my Toastmasters clubs welcomed visitors from outside the Denver Metro area. Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide [...]

Want to Be Braver? Join Toastmasters!

Most people would like to be braver both in person and on social media. If you are one of those people, I highly recommend that you join a local Toastmasters club. “The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communications and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.” (from the Toastmasters’ website) Webster’s defines brave as “possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance.” I believe that having more self-confidence helps people be braver. The concepts are closely [...]

Gain Confidence and Skills with Toastmasters

Do you want to be more confident? Would you like to improve your communication and leadership skills? If the answer to either of these questions is “Yes,” then I strongly suggest that you join a Toastmasters club. These clubs are available all over the world, and you can find the ones closest to you at www.toastmastersinternational.org.   The mission of a Toastmasters club is to “provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.” I have been a member of Toastmasters for nearly 20 [...]

Use Social Media to Mentor Others

Do you mentor others through social media? There are countless ways to use social media to mentor others. And just as when you mentor people in real life, you end up benefiting just as much, if not more, as the person being mentored.   Not long after I got active on LinkedIn, I happened to read a discussion posted in the Toastmasters International LinkedIn group by a fellow named Raj. He was looking for some guidance on a specialized speaking project, and no one in his club had ever done that type of project, which involved interpersonal communication. His request [...]

4 Social Media Tips for Nonprofit Organizations

Are you active in a nonprofit organization? Are you connected via social media with that entity and with members in that entity? Having just spent a couple of years spearheading an initiative to get more social media involvement among members of a Toastmasters district that has over 170 clubs and 3,000 Toastmasters in three states, I have some thoughts on this topic.   Have Social Media Links on Your Website Even though I blog about social media, ultimately everything in cyberspace needs to circle back to an entity’s website. Whether that entity is a small business, a corporation or a [...]

Social Media for Posting Events

When you have an event to promote, what’s one of the first places you post it? Probably most of you would answer Facebook. You might send out a tweet about it. You might announce it to members of a LinkedIn group. Heck, you might even spread the word via Pinterest. One of the handiest features of Facebook is the Event Feature – both for posting events you want others to attend and for reminders of events you want to attend. It is very easy to create an event on Facebook. After you have created it, click on “Invite Friends,” and [...]
