How To Be More Successful at Networking

Would you like to learn how to be more successful at networking? Many people can feel frustrated or even intimidated about networking with others, especially in business environments. So, they avoid going to networking events. Or they attend them, but only talk with people they already know. Over the 11 years I’ve been in business full-time, I’ve learned a lot about networking with other business owners. I’m breaking this blog post into the “what” and “how” of networking. These tips apply to in-person networking. The “What” of Networking When and Where – Select networking events and groups that meet when [...]

Use Social Media to Announce Your Accomplishments

Do you use social media to announce your accomplishments? You may feel that people will get annoyed if you celebrate yourself. Instead, I have experienced that people will be happy for you and honor you for your accomplishments.   Being Named 2024 Solopreneur of the Year On February 13, 2024, the West Metro Chamber of Commerce, serving Jefferson County, Colorado, named me its 2024 Solopreneur of the Year. There were three award finalists, and the emcee acknowledged each of us individually. I was thrilled to hear her read my name as the award winner. Walking up to the stage [...]

Thoughts on Getting Older

What are your thoughts on getting older? Since I'm celebrating my 75th birthday this week, I’ve been reflecting on what getting older means to me. Research findings vary in terms of classifying older people into different segments. The approach that makes the most sense to me is the following: People 60 – 74 are young-old People 75 – 84 are old-old People 85+ are the oldest-old Seeing that I’m leaving the young-old category and moving into the next one is sobering. Over the last few years, I’ve had a few more aches and pains. Yet, I’m very fortunate to have [...]

Social Media and People Over 60

During a recent podcast interview, the host asked me to provide some perspectives on social media and people over 60. We discussed that many people in this age group find social media too complicated. Even when they’ve been shown the steps of how to do things on social media, they might have trouble remembering the steps. Or maybe they find the whole experience of being on social media pointless. I offered a number of suggestions for ways that people 60 and over can be safer on social media. We discussed the benefits of using these sites for someone in their [...]

Hats Off to Marie Leslie

Hats off to Marie Leslie – one of my dearest business colleagues. She and her husband are relocating soon from the Denver area to South Carolina. Recently, she and I had lunch, and I was so glad to get one more in-person visit with her before her big move. That’s when we had the photo taken that’s at the top of this blog post. Do you take the time to let your business colleagues know how much they mean to you? Too often, we take these folks for granted and don’t publicly honor them as much as we could. So, [...]

How a New Professional Headshot Can Impact Your Business

Have you considered how a new professional headshot can impact your business? Earlier this month, I got a new professional headshot, my first in nearly nine years. Since I was relatively happy with one that was taken back in 2014, I wasn’t motivated to get a new one. As I prepared to celebrate the 10th anniversary of my business, I decided it was time for a refresh of my look. Along with getting my logo revamped, I scheduled a photo shoot with professional photographer Kellie Henriksen. Her creativity in how she staged each photo, along with her warmth and friendliness, [...]

Types of Videos to Use in Video Marketing

Do you ever wonder about which types of videos to use in video marketing? I recently turned to Beth Klepper, founder of Mainstream Video Production, for some guidance on this topic. I’ve worked with Beth and her team for over seven years to create videos for my website and social media. Before we had our consultation last week, Beth had reviewed the videos I currently have on my website and social media and made suggestions for the types of videos I should use. Three Types of Videos There are three basic types of videos to use in video marketing: [...]

Celebrate Your Accomplishments on Social Media!

Do you celebrate your accomplishments on social media? You may feel that people will get annoyed and think of you as a braggart if you celebrate yourself. Instead, what I have experienced is that people will be happy for you and honor you for your accomplishments.   Joyce Graduates as a Member of the Leadership Jefferson County Class of 2022 In my June newsletter, my lead article was about my upcoming graduation as a member of the Leadership Jefferson County Class of 2022. This 10-month program was sponsored by the West Metro Chamber Foundation. It included a 1 ½-day retreat [...]
