Ever feel overwhelmed by all the notifications you get about the activity on your social media sites? Adjusting your notifications settings will help you address this issue.

Five text messages received against person showing mobile phone

If you don’t adjust the notifications settings for each of your sites, you may receive more notifications than you want. Each social site has a notification setting, which you can use to determine WHAT you want to be notified about and HOW you want to be notified.

Here are some tips for managing the notifications settings on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Notifications Settings in Facebook

  • For your personal Page: Go into Settings by clicking on the padlock icon at the top of your page. Then click on the See More Settings hyperlink and choose Notifications.
  • Click on the word Edit to the right of the words On Facebook.
  • Here’s where you determine WHAT  you want to be notified about. You also determine HOW you want to be notified.
  • For things you want to be notified of via your globe icon, leave the setting at On (the default).
  • For things you don’t want, click Off.
  • You can also get these notifications via email and/or text messages – or not. Simply turn them on or off.
  • In some cases, such as notifications of activities in groups you’re a member of, you have the option for Highlights. This means you don’t receive a notification every time a member of the group posts something.
  • For your business page on Facebook, only the admins of these pages can adjust these settings.

Notifications Settings in LinkedIn

  • Click on the flag icon at the top of your page. It’s a bell icon if you’re using the LinkedIn app.
  • You can “unsubscribe” from notifications about updates on your own postings and those of your connections. Do this by clicking on the X at the top right corner of the notification. Then click on Unsubscribe.
  • Typically, you would want to see the notifications regarding your own activity so you can read any comments posted to them.
  • However, if you aren’t interested in the articles written by one or more of your connections, you can unsubscribe to all articles.
  • To adjust which notifications come through your email, go to Privacy and Settings. Find this section by holding your cursor over the little photo of you at the top right of the page. Click on Privacy and Settings in the drop down list.
  • Click on Communications, and then Email Frequency.
  • Scroll down to Notifications and click on Details. From there you can adjust the settings according to what activity you want to know about via email.
